Holiday Crafting Fun: Magical Reindeer Food

Help Guide Santa's Reindeers to Your Home

By Heather Leigh Carroll-Landon, PhD - Publisher Macaroni Kid, Henderson-Boulder City, North Las Vegas, & SW Las Vegas December 18, 2020

The holidays are almost here and I am a sucker for having fun, making crafts, and enjoying this time with friends and family. One of my favorite things to make is Reindeer Food. It is simple, easy, and makes fun add-on gifts. Plus, kids love to sprinkle this on the lawn to show Santa the way to their home. (Best thing is, this recipe is bird safe.)

What you need:
  • 2 cups raw oats
  • 1 tablespoon red sprinkles or edible glitter
  • 1 tablespoon green sprinkles or edible glitter
  • Bird seed
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Small containers or bags
  • Cardstock paper
  • Ribbon or twine
To make:
  1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl
  2. Divide up into smaller containers or bags
  3. Create a graphic with the following poem or print out the one provided here
  4. Print poem on cardstock and attach to containers or bags with ribbon or twine

Sprinkle on the lawn at night! Then watch it sparkle in the moonlight!

As Santa’s Reindeers fly and roam -- This will guide them to your home!

This extra-special reindeer food recipe is easy to make and bird-friendly (in case Santa’s reindeer leave behind crumbs). I’ve seen recipes that use glitter or other inedible items, but it’s best to use animal-safe ingredients to protect our wildlife friends. Reindeer food makes great extras for gifts and stocking stuffers.
